Sunbird Hotels and Resorts Opens K11 Billion Livingstonia International Conference Centre, Elevating Malawi’s MICE Offering

Sunbird Hotels and Resorts, Malawi’s leading and publicly listed hotel chain, is proud to announce the opening of its highly anticipated newest addition, the Livingstonia International Conference Centre (LICC), located at the Sunbird Beach resort, home to Sunbird Livingstonia and Sunbird Waterfront in Salima.

This landmark development marks a significant milestone in the Group’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) business, where the corporate segment remains the anchor market. The K11 billion investment is set to reposition Malawi’s lakeside as a premier destination for conferences and business events, while strengthening destination Malawi’s capacity to host regional and international gatherings.

The Livingstonia International Conference Centre offers versatile venue spaces designed to accommodate a wide range of events, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and modern technology to deliver world-class conference experiences.

Sunbird Hotels and Resorts Head of Sales, Marketing and Distribution, Temwa Kanjadza, described the development as a transformative addition to Malawi’s business tourism infrastructure.

“The addition of the Livingstonia International Conference Centre to Sunbird Livingstonia and Waterfront is a significant milestone as we continue to elevate the MICE experience for domestic, regional and international delegates on the shores of Lake Malawi. The facility offers a unique value proposition, with its strategic location just 100 kilometers from the capital city, making it an attractive destination for bleisure — seamlessly combining business and leisure for our corporate segment,” she said.

She further highlighted the facility’s exceptional capabilities:

“The LICC features world-class amenities, including a 1,000-seater main conference arena equipped with advanced audiovisual technology, and a total conference capacity of up to 1,500 delegates across six breakaway rooms, each accommodating between 20 and 150 participants. The LICC also includes a dedicated restaurant facility with seating capacity for up to 300 guests.”

Kanjadza further commented on other developments:

“Our product repositioning efforts at the resort are progressing steadily, underway is also construction of an additional 60 modern rooms scheduled for completion in April 2026. This strategic expansion will significantly enhance the resort’s accommodation capacity, strengthening support for the Livingstonia International Conference Centre, while meeting the growing demand from both leisure and corporate travelers.”

“The opening of the Livingstonia International Conference Centre reinforces Sunbird Hotels and Resorts’ commitment to investing in Malawi’s tourism and hospitality sector, while supporting the country’s positioning as a competitive MICE destination within the region and beyond.”

The facility is expected to attract high-profile conferences, corporate events, and international delegations, further contributing to tourism growth, economic development, and enhanced global visibility for Malawi.
