Sports & Recreation
If you are looking to relax and unwind, golf and tennis are available nearby, while a swimming pool and children’s playground are available on the grounds of the hotel.
Closer still are the two best galleries in Lilongwe, Central Africana, which sell old / antiquarian books, maps, prints and posters with a Malawi and Central African emphasis. Nearby you can find La Galleria which showcases the best of Malawian (and other resident) artists and sculptors.
Both are in the up-market Old Town Mall, off Chilambula Road and very close to the hotel.
An hour south of Lilongwe on the main road to Blantyre is Dedza Mountain.
From its summit (there is a forestry road up it) there are unimpeded views across Lake Malawi to the east and far into Mozambique to the West.
At the foot of the mountain is Dedza Pottery where all manner of pots, mugs, and house decorations may be bought. A place you shouldn’t miss for Malawian souvenirs.
In April and May this mountainous area becomes a flower garden as the cosmos blooms and the fields turn white, purple and yellow.
A popular whole day excursion, with the recent opening of the tarred Golomoti road, takes the visitor down the steep shoulders of the Rift valley from Dedza to Mtakataka and then north to Salima and finally back to Lilongwe with many and varied roadside shopping experiences en route.
Perfectly formed models of cars and trucks in local woods are sold on the escarpment, along with giant man-sized statues at Mua. Here there is also a remarkable museum to Chewa culture and traditions.
Basket ware and cane furniture can be found around Mvera on the road back to Lilongwe.
