Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, accounts for 20% of the country’s total surface area. The Shire River, Lake Malawi’s outlet, drains into the Zambezi River which then drains into the Indian Ocean. Dr. David Livingstone, a British missionary and explorer, discovered this Lake in 1959 during his quest to abolish slave trading prevalent in the area. Lake Malawi was deemed “The Lake of Stars” by Livingstone due to the star-like appearance of the lights from the fishermen’s lanterns over the blackness of the water.

This crystal-clear fresh water lake boasts of over 500 species of fish which includes cichlids, locally known as Mbuna and are endemic to this lake.

This pristine lake is truly one of Africa’s great treasures.
